Thanksgiving Art and Crafts!

The holidays are fast approaching and Thanksgiving is next week. Thanksgiving is such a great time to eat food, be with family and relax. Majority of us have some days off during that week and what a good way to entertain the kids then creating and crafting.

If you wanted to make these I’m guessing you pretty much know what you’ll need.

Turkey Pumpkins

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR THIS THANKSGIVING CRAFT:

  • Mini pumpkins – both white and orange will work

  • Acrylic craft paints – yellow, red, black, white

  • Fine detail paint brush

  • Craft paper – green, orange, red, yellow

  • Scissors

HOW TO MAKE MINI TURKEY PUMPKINS:

To begin, paint turkey faces on the side of each mini pumpkin. If you want a quick video tutorial, I painted the exact turkey face on a mini succulent planter here. The premise is simple. Trust me. If you can paint simple raindrops, dots, and short lines, then you can paint a turkey face. First, paint two small black raindrops (or tears) for the eyes. Paint a single tiny white dot of paint at the bottom of each eye. Then, paint a sideways yellow raindrop and a tiny red oval for the nose. Finally, paint yellow stick legs at the bottom of the mini pumpkin.

Next, make paper feathers. Cut small rectangles of craft paper, and fold them in half lengthwise or “hot dog style”. Then, cut an oblong feather shape, leaving a bit of a stump for the end of the feather. Finally, cut angled slits in the paper to create fringe. Unfold the paper, and you have a feather! Be sure to make feathers in varying colors and sizes, so that you can layer them. Carefully attach the feathers to the top of the mini pumpkin, right at the base of the stem. Secure with hot glue. I found it easiest to hold the feathers flat while the hot glue dried. Then, after the glue cooled, I folded the feathers so they stuck straight up.

Leaf Friends

  • Pressed Leaves

  • A black marker or paintpen

  • A white marker or paintpen

  • A sticky notepad

  • 2 leather cords

Take a leaf or two and draw animal faces on them. You can even make a pair: how about a cat and a mouse? Make pairs or groups of your animal leaves to tell a little story! For example, many of these leaves lend themselves to being made into baby birds. Draw googly eyes with the white and black marker, then add a beak.

Beaded Pipe Cleaner Corn

How to make Beaded Pipe Cleaner Indian Corn:

Here’s a list of what you’ll need. The affiliate links below will take you to products on Amazon that are similar to the supplies we used to make this craft:

  • 4 Pipe Cleaners (12 inch length)

  • Plastic Pony Beads (approximately 120 beads)

Grab four 12 inch tan coloured pipe cleaners and an assortment of beads. Line up your pipe cleaners so they are even on each end and twist them together in the middle. Next, evenly space each pipe cleaner and spread them into the shape of a star. Start threading the beads onto each pipe cleaner, until all 8 are covered. Be sure to leave a little over an inch of pipe cleaner showing on each end so you have enough to twist your husks later on. Once you’ve covered your star in beads it’s time to shape your corn! Carefully bend each end upward and gather the points together. Next, take the tops of your pipe cleaners and twist them a couple times to secure the beads and form the corn “husks.” Be sure to leave some ends free and fan them out a bit.
